Denmark

Denmark Travel Adventures Denmark Travel AdventuresDenmark is primarily made up of one peninsula, Jutland (Jylland in Danish), and two islands, Sealand (Sjælland) and Funen (Fyn). Sealand is the bigger of the two islands and also where Copenhagen, the capital and biggest city, is located. Denmark is the smallest of the three Scandinavian countries, with only 43,000 square km. There are over 400 islands in total but only 100 of them are inhabited. The country has 4.500 miles of coast line and you are never more than 30 miles from the sea, no matter where you are in the country. The biggest island in the world, Greenland, also belongs to Denmark, as do the Faroe Islands. If Greenland were to be included in the total area of the country, Denmark would be the biggest country in Europe by far and one of the biggest in the world. Denmark is perhaps the most popular of the three countries for campers. There are more than 500 campsites all over the country. The Danish word for inn is kro and if you see that word on a sign along the road, you have found the perfect combination of a place to stay and a place to eat. A long time ago, when people traveled by horse, it was decided that a kro should be placed every 20 km along all common roads in Denmark and, still today, you will find inns all over the country. They are as popular as ever for spending the night, grabbing a bite to eat, or both. Denmark is the number-one biking country of the three. Being a small and flat country, it’s often the best way of getting around and biking is extremely popular for recreation. Denmark has over 6,200 miles of designated biking trails. These are just a few details covered in this comprehensive guide to all the activities in the country, plus where to stay and where to dine. This is an excerpt from our much larger guide to Scandinavia.

Aquitaine, Bordeaux, Bayonne & France's Basque Country Aquitaine, Bordeaux, Bayonne & France’s Basque CountryA thoroughly detailed guide to this region of France, with full information on where to stay, how to get around, the history & culture, sights to see, and what to do. Following are a few excerpts from the guide. Some of Europe’s most beautiful cities, stunning beaches and serene, vineyard-dotted countryside are in the Aquitaine region, yet it remains underrated and undiscovered by most tourists. Bordeaux, an epicenter for wonderful wine, is an amazingly vast and entertaining city that is constantly abuzz. To the south lies the enchanting Basque Country, a region crossing into Spain whose borders are not official, but whose people are vehemently (and sometimes violently) proud and independent. Much of the Aquitaine region is a national park. Along the Pyrenees and the Spanish border are several quaint mountain and seaside villages, such as St-Jean-Pied-au-Port and Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Saint-Jean-de-Luz, practically kissing the Spanish border, is one of the prettiest small cities in all of France. The Aquitaine is a place to indulge, be it in wine, fabulous food, relaxing spa therapies, ocean breezes or incredible shopping. The outdoor adventures here are one of the main attractions. The Basque Country attracts visitors from around the globe for its year-round surfing. The national park, spanning a massive stretch of Atlantic coast, beckons those interested in watersports. The Pyrenees to the south of the region offer splendid hiking and skiing opportunities. Tip: To see Aquitaine arts and crafts in the creation stage, and to buy great locally-made wares, make stops along the Route des Métiers d’Arts (contact the Association pour la Promotion des Métiers d’Art d’Aquitaine, tel. 33-05-57-22-57-36, 353 Boulevard du Président Wilson in Bordeaux, www.route-metiers-d-art-aquitaine.com). Marseille & Aix en Provence Travel Adventures Marseille & Aix en Provence Travel AdventuresThis guide is excerpted from our much larger Adventure Guide to Provence. It zeroes in on the bustling, fascinating city of Marseilles and the surrounding area of Aix en Provence. For years, Ferne Arfin has been playing in Provence, a place where Van Gogh spent his most prolific years painting. She draws from her experience to tell you about the people, their culture and the way of life. Covering every town, village and city in the region, this book takes you sightseeing, shopping, and to the best beaches. Comprehensive background information – history, culture, geography and climate – gives you a solid knowledge of each destination and its people. Regional chapters take you on an introductory tour, with stops at museums, historic sites and local attractions. Places to stay and eat; transportation to, from and around your destination; practical concerns; tourism contacts – it’s all here! Following are some reviews of the complete guide: “The Adventure Guide to Provence and the Cote d’Azur offers plenty of practical information for the visitor who wants to explore the region. It includes info on places to stay and eat, but that isn’t its strongest point. Its best features are the adventure tips it provides for each area (boating, biking, walking, kayaking, windsurfing, you name it!) and the pertinent background information that adds depth to a visit: for example, a note about French author Antoine de St Exupéry when covering Agay, a word on Winter on the Mont Ventoux. These fall outside of the classic insights on these locations. As a frequent and long-time visitor to the region, I find the information in the guide right on the mark and recommend it highly.” — Florence Chatzigianis. “I’ve just returned from a trip to Antibes and Nice and I used this book as my guide. The recommendations were spot on; really terrific. This is a rare thing, a guide book that inspires and tempts you without making your head spin.

Here we focus on the country’s largest city and its surroundings – such cities as Potsdam and Oranienburg. Packed with all the practical travel information you could ever need, from places to stay and eat, tourist information resources, destination specific travel advice, emergency information, plus sections on history and geography that provide readers with the background knowledge essential to a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. The author’s passion for the destination comes across in the lively and detailed text, which is packed with the very best and most up-to-date information. This is a must-have volume for anyone really wanting to make the most of their German holiday. Color photos throughout. The author is a resident of Munich so he knows his subject well. “Of the three Germany guidebooks I used, this one was the most useful and not only because it covers so many places that the others simply ignored. Although you never get 10% off for showing this book, it has enough sensible advice on how to shave unnecessary expenses off the budget without ever feeling or acting like a cheapskate. I enjoyed the author’s explanation of Germany’s complex history but others may like the “History Cheat Sheet” that reduces six pages of history to a half page summary. Although the author has the ability to focus on the essentials, he drops enough fascinating tidbits to keep it interesting. I also love the explanation of major trends in German culture, arts, music, and literature. The author clearly has opinions but never treats the reader like an idiot or writes down to you in any sense. As a non-German speaker I also loved the way all German terms are translated throughout the guide not expecting me to suddenly remember what is a kirch or Schloss halfway through the book.

Florence, Chianti, Siena & Surroundings Florence, Chianti, Siena & SurroundingsVisitors have been drawn to Florence’s architectural and artistic treasures for centuries – and for good reason. But, with an historical center of only half a square-mile, it can be hard to see the sights through the crowds. The throng on the Duomo steps, the lines for the Uffizi and the jostling for photos on Piazzale Michelangelo all require a good dose of patience, especially under the blistering summer heat. Fortunately, early evening offers a respite; the quieter streets and softer lighting at that time bring out the colors of the marble-clad cathedral topped by Filippo Brunelleschi’s archetypal dome, the sheer immensity of the Palazzo Vecchio and the charm of the medieval Ponte Vecchio, with its shops latched shut for the night. But avoiding the lines when you enter the buildings and museums takes some preparation, especially if you arrive in the busiest and hottest summer months when the only option is to drag yourself out of bed at sunrise to beat the crowds to the 8:15 am openings. Not to be missed: * Piazza del Duomo: Famous address of the Duomo, Campanile and Battistero. * Galleria degli Uffizi: The most select picture gallery in the world and potent symbol of Medici power. * Palazzo Vecchio: Medieval town hall architecture at its most forceful. * Galleria dell’Accademia: Home to Michelangelo’s David. * Via dei Tornabuoni: Even if you can’t afford to buy, you’ll enjoy the window-shopping on this luxury-laden street. * Piazza Repubblica: The 19th century makes its mark. * Museo Nazionale del Bargello: Florence’s national sculpture museum. * Giardino di Boboli: Sculpture-packed gardens behind the museum-packed Palazzo Pitti. * The Oltrano: A warren of narrow streets filled with artisan workshops and some great restaurants. * Piazzale Michelangelo: The classic Florentine view. * The churches: Santa Maria Novella, San Lorenzo, Orsanmichele, Santa Croce, Santo Spirito and San Miniato al Monte are just some of the delights on offer.

Best Dives of Mexico Best Dives of MexicoBased on the classic Best Dives of the Caribbean, this publication focuses on the Mexican Riviera Maya, Cozumel and Akumal alone. Includes the latest and best dive and snorkel sites, each rated for visual excellence and marine life. The author’s knowledge of the sites is unparalleled. From sunken planes and snorkel trails to blue holes, the best destinations beneath the waves are covered. Also covered are the best places to stay & eat, activities, sightseeing and all practical details needed for visitors. “I have bought both editions of this book, mostly because the first edition got so dog-eared that I wanted a clean one for vacation last year. The book is a marvelous source of information for both the snorkeler and the diver. The authors divide the book into chapters on individual islands, starting out with a brief but interesting history of the island, a topographical description, relative location map, best time to go, weather, and proximity to other islands. They then rate the island’s diving locations, awarding from 1 to 5 stars, and provide another larger map visually locating the sites. Each site is described in detail, with info on depth, sea life, currents, visibility, photo ops and difficulty level. As if that weren’t enough, they include some (but not enough!) beautiful photos, and end each chapter with yet more info on dive operators (detailed), beaches, other activities, dining, accommodations (with rates, addresses and phone numbers), medical facilities, documentation requirements, currency, driving, local customs, departure taxes, etc. I’ve been exploring the Caribbean for almost a decade now; I take this compact book with me everywhere. My only complaint: I wish they covered more islands!” — (Suziekew). “The new, 2006, third edition of Best Dives of the Caribbean is packed full of dive-vacation planning information. It tells what time of year to go, the most popular dive sites with details on what to expect

Adventure Guide to the Yucatan, Cancun & Cozumel Adventure Guide to the Yucatan, Cancun & CozumelDefining adventure broadly enough to include “lying on the beach and sipping margaritas,” this tourist guidebook to the southern Mexican state of the Yucatan has a focus on activities, but does include the standard information on transportation, hotels, food and drink, and other topics helpful to visiting the beaches and archaeological sites.

Cancun, Cozumel & the Riviera Maya Alive Cancun, Cozumel & the Riviera Maya AliveWhat a joy after reading some of the other guides to Cancun! This book covers almost everything, and is obviously written by someone with an intimate familiarity with the region. It offers helpful hints on each page, rather than just pointing out lists of places to visit (although it does this also). The Mexican to U.S. clothing size conversion chart is particularly helpful. The book dedicates 12 pages to shopping in Cancun, a topic restricted to 3/4 page in the other guidebook I purchased at the same time (and sent back). The coverage of places to stay, places to eat, and what to do is very objective and frank, unlike some of the guides which seem to be produced by the local chamber of commerce. As a lover of travel (and travel guides), I can’t say enough about this one ? it’s as good a guide to a city as I have read.

Adventure Guide to Puerto Vallarta Adventure Guide to Puerto VallartaPuerto Vallarta, on Mexico’s Southern Pacific Coast, became a world attraction when John Huston filmed Night of the Iguana here. It was during the filming that Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor fell in love; they built adjoining houses and lived here for many years. 244 cruise ships visit each year, with 420,000 passengers. There are 40 beaches here and innumerable little coves where you can spend the entire day alone. Among the attractions are whale-watching, turtle-spotting, birding, snorkeling, canopy tours of the jungle, where you swing on a cable at treetop height. Puerto Vallarta has become an international music scene as well, with many prominent performers such as Jethro Tull spending time here. Guadalajara is nearby, as is Chapala Lake and Los Arcos Underwater National Park. In both regions, the choices of tropical, palm-lined lagoons and soft sandy beaches seem without end yet are easily accessible, thanks to Mexico’s Highway 200 on the Pacific coast. Each beach resort town is different in character and the author explores them all. Like all Adventure Guides, this book shows you how to experience this coast intensely and directly – seeing it close-up through walks, watersports of all kinds, bike rides, horseback excursions, culinary adventures, language courses and interacting with the people. That discovery is the essence of adventure travel. The places to stay are all reviewed in depth, based on personal visits, from budget spots to lavish resorts, plus every restaurant and food stand worth mentioning is described. Our author has tried them all!

CultureShock! Spain CultureShock! SpainCultureShock! Spain is the definitive manual for adjusting to life in Spain. Not only does it translate local customs and culture and warn against making any social faux pas, but it also provides practical information to enable readers to live and work in Spain with ease. Understand the Spanish love of socialising and take part in the ritual evening paseo. Learn the concept behind the term mañana and how best to adapt your daily life to all that mañana entails. Discover the A–Z of Spanish food, the famous tapas culture and how best to fit in with Spaniards’ late eating hours. On a practical level, check the documents needed for opening a Spanish bank account, the do’s and don’ts in the workplace and how to address locals without giving offence. Written from an outsider’s perspective, CultureShock! Spain is all you’ll need for life in Spanish society.

Northern Spain, Barcelona, Pamplona & Andorra Northern Spain, Barcelona, Pamplona & AndorraThe authors guide us through every corner of this fascinating region, where they have spent much of their time over many years. Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is one of the most unusual churches in the world, with its melting sand-castle appearance and odd bubble-shaped spires. Catalonia’s Costa Brava provides stunning views as the Mediterranean waves clash with the jagged coastline. The stretch of small resort cities along the Costa Brava, which means the Rugged Coast, feels like a world caressed by the heavens. Stand above the rocks and look down to the sweeping coastline, the sea stretching endlessly. Relax at a seaside bar, sipping cocktails. Hike the trails leading from the shore to the hills above. Unlike the tourist-swarmed French Riviera, the Costa Brava is intimate. It’s like discovering a well-guarded secret. There are several busy resort cities, but there are also many quiet and isolated beaches. Some of the prime beach cities include Roses, L’Escala and Blanes. Mountain-climbing destinations, ski resorts, spa villages, Gallo-Roman ruins and prehistoric cave paintings are abundant in the region. Catelonia is marked by breathtaking cliffs, expanses of beaches and the thriving, hip seaside city of Barcelona. In the Navarre region, men taunt large, dangerous animals for Pamplona’s annual Running of the Bulls. Andorra is its own little world, and not just because it’s a 290-square-mile independent principality (a fifth the size of Rhode Island). Nestled atop some of the highest peaks of the Pyrenees, the principality is filled with amazing architecture, surreal panoramic views and some of Europe’s finest skeeng resorts. Andorra attracts tourists for its duty-free shopping alone.

Barcelona & Surroundings Travel Adventures Barcelona & Surroundings Travel AdventuresGeographically, Cataluña, the region surrounding Barcelona, is not unlike Spain as a whole. The soaring Pyrenees Mountains in the north separating Spain from France yield to the Mediterranean’s Costa Brava in the east. Were it not for the ungainly resorts that have diminished its natural beauty since the 1960s, this “wild coast” would be the loveliest, if not the most extreme Mediterranean coast of the peninsula. Still, its features – the dark, jagged rock outcroppings, the foreboding cliffs and the general angriness of it all – have not been completely buried in concrete, just harnessed for the ease of our enjoyment. There are the remarkable ruins of Empíries to explore, vestiges of the Greeks and the Romans who were truly the first to develop this coast, and a few of its coastal towns – Cadaques comes to mind – were never wrecked. We have the Pyrenees to thank for saving Cadaques, since to reach it one must ascend and wind around the lower reaches of these mountains for 45 minutes (on good roads) before making the descent toward this, Salvador Dalí’s favored retreat. Developers tend to favor easier roads. Higher up in the Catalan Pyrenees, where the peaks top out at over 3,000 m (9,840 feet) and waterfalls cascade down their faces, there is more to be thankful for. A series of Romanesque churches, the product of Cataluña’s medieval golden age, when its counts allied with neighboring Aragón to create a seafaring kingdom unrivaled in the Mediterranean at the time, are hidden in far flung valleys, set along crystalline streams away from the package tourists and even paved roads. With snowfall, the Catalan Pyrenees offer great cross-country and downhill skiing and, when it melts, great whitewater adventures. Throughout the year one can marvel at the secluded wilderness of the Aigüestortes National Park and wonder why they ever spent so much time in Barcelona.

Stockholm StockholmA highly illustrated travel guide to Stockholm in the award-winning DK Eyewitness Travel series

Stockholm StockholmSituated on one of the world’s most beautiful harbors, Stockholm has set the benchmark for civilized urban living since the time of the Vikings. Tony Griffiths reveals a city of power, intrigue, and murder; of scientists and investors; and a sensual city, home of Greta Garbo and the smorgasbord. Its medieval period saw the Vasa dynasty turn a small town into the capital of a dominant European power and a major trading port. In the Napoleonic era, Stockholm established itself as a center of both technical and social innovation. While the city has suffered more than its fair share of misfortune, Stockholm’s cultural and commercial elite transformed it into a community which now welcomes innovation and spreads the fruits of its achievements far beyond its borders.

Frommer's Stockholm Day by Day Frommer’s Stockholm Day by DayGuides people to the best of Stockholm’s 70 museums and dozens of art galleries, including the open-air Skansen Museum and the world-renowned National Museum.; Features information on designer boutiques, the best places to visit for a thermal bath or sauna, and the best spots for nightlife.; Includes excursions to Stockholm’s Eastern Archipelago, with recommendations for boat rides, cycling, walking tours, and retreating to the lakes and beaches.

It is one of the world’s most advanced industrialized nations, yet its towns and cities are incredibly clean. It also has the distinction of being one of the oldest democracies. Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg & Western Switzerland Travel Adventures Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg & Western Switzerland Travel AdventuresThis is Switzerland’s second largest city (behind Zürich), with 178,900 residents, and is heavily influenced by its French neighbors to the west and south. Here you’ll find the quintessence or haute école of everything Switzerland stands for in the new century: beauty, wealth, education, international relations and culture, not to mention romantic scenery at its finest. One aspect of Geneva that is hard to miss is the Genevois’ love of food. In fact, Geneva is home to more restaurants per capita (over 1,100 in total) than any other major city in the world – including Manhattan. A visitor will also note that the Genevois serve an unusual proponderance of organ meat dishes, known as “abats.” Everything from blood pudding – “boudin noir” – to pickled pigs feet are popular and commonplace here. Geneva has over 30 museums and private galleries, all of which contain prestigious private and public displays of art work, historical documents and cultural highlights. Geneva offers a diverse variety of cultural and sporting events such as classical music concerts, open-air movies on the lakeshore, as well as various trade fairs. Annually Geneva is home to the Inventions and New Techniques Fair, a rousing Automobile Show, an International Book and Press Fair and the High Watchmaking Fair. This is based on our comprehensive Adventure Guide to Switzerland, which is close to 600 pages in the print version. Here, we focus on Geneva and the surrounding area in Switzerland’s western portion. Among the many towns described are Lausanne, Montreux, Neufchatel, Fribourg and Gruyeres. Also included is a detailed introduction with full information about what you need to know when visiting Switzerland. Nestled in the heart of Europe, Switzerland is a feast for the eyes, with azure-blue lakes that shine brilliantly against the greenest slopes of the surrounding Alps.

Zurich & Northeastern Switzerland Zurich & Northeastern Switzerland

The Swiss Alps Travel Adventures The Swiss Alps Travel AdventuresThe Valais region encompasses Switzerland’s most rugged terrain. Our coverage extends from the gateway city of Geneva to the upper reaches of the Walliser Alps along the Italian frontier. Visitors are apt to enter the region in Geneva, a small, cosmopolitan city between the border of France and the western end of Lake Geneva, known in French as Lac Leman. The city bustles with the business of international organizations, plays along a garden-lined lakefront, and harbors a pleasant pedestrian old town. The city of Lausanne lies across the lake, drawing visitors for its own pleasant lakefront and the Olympic Games History Museum. Beyond, in the Valais region, protrudes the magnificent Matterhorn Peak, with famed Zermatt at its foot and secluded Saas-Fee just over the hill. In southeastern Switzerland next to the border of Italy, Zermatt reclines amid a cluster of 38 4,000-m peaks. Above the town towers the distinctive hook of the Matterhorn crest. For most visitors, Zermatt isn’t a place to relax; it’s a place to play, and play hard. About 400 km of hiking paths wind through the mountains above Zermatt, most areas well-served by cableway or mountain train. The most spectacular of the trails run through the Sunnegga and Rothorn areas, winding around lakes, skirting glaciers, and all within view of the Matterhorn across the valley. One of these, the Marmot Trail, leads from mid-mountain Rothorn at Blauherd down to Sunnegga via a path lined with several marmot family groups. Walkers wanting a closer look at the majestic mountain should try the new Matterhorn Trail. It drops from the lift station at Schwarzsee, along the foot of the Matterhorn to Stafel, to the lake at Zmutt, and then down to the lift station at Furi – passing several inviting mountain huts along the way. Saas-Fee lies to the east of Zermatt, on the opposite side of the towering Dom.
